Parking and getting there

Where to sleep in the reserve

Rules change every year. Check them with the Parc national des Pyrénées before you go.

Inside the Néouvielle nature reserve you may only pitch a tent in the two marked bivouac areas, at Lac d'Orédon and Lac d'Aubert, from 19:00 to 09:00. Everywhere else in the reserve it is forbidden.

  • Fires are forbidden everywhere in the reserve. Use a gas stove only.
  • No dogs (even on a lead), no drones, no swimming in the lakes.
  • Do not feed the goats or other livestock.
  • Take all rubbish home and pick nothing.
  • Our camp at the upper Bastan lake appears to be just outside the reserve; we are confirming the boundary with the national park.
  • Summer fire orders can also ban camping near forests; check the Hautes-Pyrénées prefecture before you go.

Safety and honesty

This was a real group trip. The planned loop was not completed: we changed the plan on day 1 and camped at a closer lake.

This guide describes the route we actually walked, not the route we planned.

Mountain weather changes fast; summer storms build in the afternoon. Agree a route and a meeting point before you start, and do not split the group.

On day 2, from the high ridge you can see the Lac d'Aubert side. Its car park is not a shortcut to your car at Orédon. The honest bail-out is to walk down to Aubert and take the summer shuttle back to Orédon (about every 30 minutes, 09:30 to 18:00, mid-June to mid-September).

Questions about the Néouvielle loop

How long is the Néouvielle lakes loop?

The loop we walked is 26.2 km over two days with one night out, about 1,550 m of ascent and descent. Day 1 is 10.8 km (about +870 m) and day 2 is 15.5 km (about +670 m). The high point is 2,470 m.

Where does the hike start?

At the Orédon car park, next to the Chalet du lac d'Orédon at 1,850 m, in the Néouvielle massif in the French Pyrenees. Parking over 8 hours costs EUR 10 (2026).

How do you get there from Barcelona?

About 4 h 15 min and 340 km by car via Lleida and the A-138 through the toll-free Bielsa tunnel, then the D177 lakes road to Orédon. No public transport reaches Orédon.

When is the best season?

Late June to late September. We walked it in mid-August.

Can you camp in the Néouvielle nature reserve?

Only in the two marked bivouac areas, at Lac d'Orédon and Lac d'Aubert, from 19:00 to 09:00. Everywhere else in the reserve it is forbidden. Rules change every year, so check them with the Parc national des Pyrénées before you go.
